Troop 2 honors Ernest Smith, First Scoutmaster of the Troop.

During our flagging of veterans graves today we visited the grave of Ernest Smith at the North Cemetery, and left a memorial wreath. Mr. Smith was our first scoutmaster when we got our start in 1911 at the East Weymouth Congregational Church.

The photo below is of Mr. Smith at the 35th anniversary celebration for Troop 2 in 1946.

At that time there was a boys Sunday School class taught by Mr. Smith. This class was organized about 1908, and later formed into a social club.

As time went on they felt more in need of a program of activity, and when the Rev. Walter H. Commons, pastor of the Congregational Church, East Weymouth, read the Boy Scout Handbook, it was decided that a scout organization would provide valuable training for these young men.

On January 22, 1911 they voted to organize their class as a Boy Scout troop and immediately applied for a charter. At that time, Reverend Commons asked Mr. Smith to assume the role of scoutmaster. Troop 2 was officially chartered and organized formally as a Troop on April 16, 1911, holding their first scout meeting on Saturday, April 22, and the first hike on
May 20th.

Original scouts of the troop at our founding, to the best of our knowledge, were

John T. Dizer
Julian Merchant
Harold Gardner
Alton Blanchard
Donald Canterbury
Vincent Robinson
Howard Diersch
Elmer Sampson
William Rix
Merton Rix
Roderick Ells
Francis Dennison
Arthur Russo
Ralph Chase
Harold Morse
Robert Gay
William Savage
Reginald Bates
Parker Bates
Norman Dizer

These boys were led by Mr. Smith, who served from April to June 1911.

Honoring our Veterans at Memorial Day

Troop 2 observes Memorial Day the same way each year. Since 1911 we've had the honor of marching in the Weymouth parade to recognize our veterans, and have included our Drum Corps since 1931.

In addition, we decorate the graves of veterans, many of whom gave their lives for our country, at several cemetaries in Weymouth.

The oldest photo in our collection of "Decorating Day" dates from the 1930's, and is shown below:

Photos of our scouts replacing worn flags are below.

Photo Opportunities at Franklin Pratt's House.

A Troop 2 tradition, as part of Weymouth parades through the mid 1970's was to take a photo in front of Franklin Pratt's house across from the old police station on Pleasant Street. This is now the site of the Franklin Pratt Library.

Parade Leggings

Troop 2 has a long history of wearing canvas leggings as part of our formal uniform during parades. In the past we wore green leggings, and moved to a white legging over time.

Some of our leggings are BSA issue, which was common in the 1950's and 1960's, seen in many early scout advertisements. Many of our larger sized leggings are military issue. Either way, they serve as a connection to our past.

No one who has ever worn them will forget the struggle to get them on correctly, the lacing, and the work required to tuck pants in properly and adjust them to fit comfortably.

Here are some photos of our scouts preparing for a parade, lacing up their leggings.

Twin Eagles - the Fullers and the Mckay's.

A highlight of our Annual Awards and Recognition Dinner for many years was our honored guests, John and Buell Fuller. The Fuller brothers were twin Eagle scouts from Quincy who brought members of their Troop to perform a Native American ceremony at our banquet. The Fullers are the first twins to receive their Eagle badges, awarded in 1927.

In an interesting twist, Troop 2 had our own set of twins do the same 55 years later, in 1982 – brothers Rob and Rich McKay.

Photos of the Fullers, the McKays, and a performance from the mid 1970's by the Fuller's troop are below:

Annual Award and Recognition Banquet

Over the years Troop 2 has held an annual awards and recognition dinner, with presentation of Eagle badges and other rank advancement and merit badges to the scouts of our troop. The date and venue has changed over the years, however the spirit of celebrating the achievements and efforts of these young men remains the same.

Some years the Troop may have one or two Eagle scouts to celebrate, other years we’ve had as many as 10 or 12 Eagles. Troop 2 is proud of the over 240 scouts who have earned scouting’s highest rank, but we are also proud of ALL achievements by our scouts, and this event gives us an opportunity to recognize their hard work and dedication.

In the past the event has been held at the Weymouth Heights Club, at Valley Pines, at the First Church Weymouth Heights, and is now held in the Immaculate Conception Parish Center.

Photos below show Eagle scouts honored at the WHC, VP, and at the First Church over the years.
